Greetings from Mid-Michigan – The Great Lakes State!
Happy Valentine’s Day
We require everyone to send in a letter to the Executive Board on how the IUEC affected their lives to be included in the drawing for the David Jeffrey Smith Scholarship. Below is part of a letter from one of the David Jeffrey Smith Scholarship recipients. It’s sad and yet up lifting to read. I am glad our Union could be such a help to the family and I’m not surprised that one of our members could be a great role model as well. This is a great example of the families in the IUEC and why I consider the IUEC as part of my family and all of yours. I would also like to thank August for sharing her family with us and I wish her an amazing future.
August Bishop Daughter of Shanin Schmidt
IUEC, Local 85
The International Union of Elevator Constructors has greatly impacted my life. My biological father was killed in an accident on Christmas Eve when I was only two years old. My mother was pregnant with my brother, and her and my father had recently moved into our new home. While we had the best support imaginable from our family, neighbors, friends, and community, they could not change the fact that my father was gone forever. I lost my father that served as so many things to me; role model, playmate, provider. When my mother remarried six years later, my step dad could not replace my father, but he did fulfill many important things that had been lost. Monetarily, his employment, and support of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, provided my family with superior benefits that were not attainable by my mother as she was raising us by herself. I understand and appreciate the generous health benefits we enjoy as family members of the IUEC.
My stepfather, also serves as a role model to me. He is one of the hardest working people I know. He has taught my brothers and I that a strong work ethic is one of the greatest predictors to future success. He is proud of the work he does in the elevator business, and represents his company and union well. I know if I combine that same desire to always do my best with an amazing education, I will be successful.
I appreciate how the union has benefitted my family over the years and I thank you
for considering me for the David Jeff Smith Memorial Scholarship.
